The Clone Wars - S5E11 - "A Sunny Day in the Void"

7:40 - Colonel Gascon (about the prospect of WAC-47's getting a promotion):  "Over my dead body."  Han Solo uses this same expression in A New Hope [50:42].

18:16 - Colonel Gascon (to WAC-47):  "This is our only hope.  We've got to stop following my training or your programming and follow the birds' instincts."  Leia uses the phrase "only hope" twice in A New Hope ("Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi; you're my only hope" [35:35] and "You must use the information in this R2 unit to help plan the attack; it's our only hope" [1:38:49]); C-3PO uses it once in The Empire Strikes Back ("Your highness, we must take this last transport; it's our only hope" [31:49]); Obi-Wan uses it once, referring to Luke, in Return of the Jedi ("You were our only hope" [47:24]); and Luke uses it once, referring to Leia, in Return of the Jedi ("If I don't make it back, you're the only hope for the Alliance" [1:19:39]). Sio Bibble also uses it in The Phantom Menace: "Our only hope is for the senate to side with us" [23:48].

20:08 - Colonel Gascon:  "I don't believe it; those mechs beat us here."  The context is quite different, but Luke also says, "I don't, I don't believe it" in The Empire Strikes Back, after Yoda uses the Force to get his X-wing out of the swamp [1:13:10].

The Clone Wars - S5E10 - "Secret Weapons"

0:18 - Narrator:  "Secret transmission intercepted!"  This line contains the same words that are used in Vader's interrogation of Captain Antilles in A New Hope [5:44].  Vader asks, "Where are those transmissions you intercepted?  What have you done with those plans?" to which Antilles replies, "We intercepted no transmissions."

2:09 - Mace Windu (to the droids of D-Squad):  "You've worked with the Jedi before."  This is similar to what C-3PO says to Luke about R2-D2 in A New Hope:  "I've worked with him before" [19:22].

8:26 - Colonel Gascon (to WAC-47):  "You idiot, we're caught in a tractor beam."  Han Solo also says this in A New Hope:  "We're caught in a tractor beam" [1:04:53].

13:04 - Colonel Gascon:  "It's not my fault he [M5-BZ] fried his circuitry."  "It's not my fault" also appears three times in The Empire Strikes Back.  Han [1:07:00 and 1:07:02] and Lando [1:56:52] both say this when the Millennium Falcon's hyperdrive doesn't work.  Han also says, "It's not my fault" in Return of the Jedi as he's explaining to Jabba why he didn't pay him [20:26], and in A New Hope, C-3PO, speaking to Luke after R2 disappears, has a similar line:  "It wasn't my fault, sir" [26:21].

The Clone Wars - S5E9 - "A Necessary Bond"

1:34 - Katooni (after Ganodi doesn't answer on the comlink):  "Where could she be?"  Luke has a similar line in A New Hope as he's trying to raise C-3PO on his comlink:  "Where could he be?" [1:22:12 and 1:23:19], and C-3PO himself has a similar line a bit later in A New Hope:  "Where could they be?" [1:29:33].

6:29 - Grievous (to Hondo):  "You can dispense with the pleasantries, pirate."  Vader says almost the same thing (to Moff Jerjerrod) in Return of the Jedi:  "You may dispense with the pleasantries, commander" [3:58].

9:32 - Battle droid (to R2-D2, who's creating a diversion):  "You just watch yourself."  In A New Hope, Doctor Evazan says this to Luke in the cantina [46:40].

11:08 - Huyang:  "I have instructed younglings for over a thousand generations, and these are among the best I have ever seen."  Obi-Wan uses this same phrase in A New Hope when he tells Luke, "For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the old Republic" [33:54].

15:57 - Hondo (after Katooni tells him, "They went the wrong way" [the pirate tank with the rest of the Jedi turned down a different tunnel]):  "Don't worry."  "Don't worry" also appears in Attack of the Clones (Anakin tells Padmé, "Don't worry; I've given up trying to argue with you" [1:36:02]), Revenge of the Sith (C-3PO tells Padmé, "Don't worry; I'm sure he'll be alright," referring to Anakin [1:24:00], and a clone trooper tells Bail Organa, "Don't worry; the situation is under control [1:24:35]), A New Hope (Obi-Wan tells R2-D2, "Oh, don't worry; he'll be alright," referring to Luke [30:17]; Han tells Chewbacca, "Don't worry, Chewie; I think I know what he [Luke] has in mind" [1:12:12]; and Han tells Leia, "Don't worry; she'll hold together," referring to the Millennium Falcon [1:34:57]), The Empire Strikes Back (C-3PO tells R2, "Don't worry about Master Luke; I'm sure he'll be alright" [12:45]; Luke tells R2, "Don't worry, R2.  We're going!  We're going!" [36:07]; and Han tells Leia, "Don't worry" [1:20:04]), and Return of the Jedi (Lando, referring to Han, tells Nien Nunb, "Don't worry; my friend's down there; he'll have that shield down on time" [1:27:18]).

The Clone Wars - S5E8 - "Bound for Rescue"

6:34 - One of the clone pilots suddenly lowers his speed so that the two Vulture droids that were pursuing him overtake him, similar to what Luke does with scout troopers on speeder bikes in Return of the Jedi [59:47].

12:47 - In the cockpit of the travelling carnival ship, there's yet an-other use of the hexagonal pattern seen in the homestead garage in Attack of the Clones and A New Hope:

15:10 - The framing of the shot of Obi-Wan's escape pod launching is very similar to that of C-3PO and R2-D2's escape pod launching in A New Hope, with the camera looking straight on [7:02]:

16:30 - Petro (to Katooni):  "Patience."  In The Empire Strikes Back, Yoda and Obi-Wan also counsel Luke with, "Patience!" [Yoda at 54:36 and 55:03; Obi-Wan at 1:24:18], and in Return of the Jedi, the Emperor advises Vader:  "Patience, my friend" [38:57].  It's also part of Obi-Wan's advice to Anakin in Attack of the Clones:  "Patience.  Use the Force.  Think." [21:49].  Also in Attack of the Clones, Dooku, referring to Padmé, tells Gunray, "Patience, Viceroy, patience; she will die" [1:49:27].

20:32 - Ahsoka (to Gungi):  "Get us out of here."  In A New Hope, Han Solo also says this (to Chewbacca):  "Chewie, get us outta here!" [55:26].

The Clone Wars - S5E7 - "A Test of Strength"

0:40 - Narrator:  "Now, having passed the test, they take their first step into a larger world."  Speaking to Luke, Obi-Wan uses the same expression in A New Hope:  "You've taken your first step into a larger world" [1:02:36].

3:19 -  Huyang (to Gungi):  "Concentrate."  Yoda also says this (to Luke) in The Empire Strikes Back [1:08:40 and 1:16:38].

3:43 - The top of Huyang's podium has the same basic design as EV-9D9's in Return of the Jedi [11:16]:

7:11 - Ahsoka (to R2):  "Get us out of here."  In A New Hope, Han Solo also says this (to Chewbacca):  "Chewie, get us outta here!" [55:26].

14:00 - Petro (after a pirate asks the younglings to hand over their crystals):  "Over my dead body."  Han Solo uses this same expression in A New Hope [50:42].

17:41 - Ahsoka:  "Hondo, the Jedi council will not take kindly to this attack."  There's some similarity between this and what Leia says to Vader in A New Hope:  "The Imperial senate will not sit still for this" [7:41].  The context is basically the same, too:  a ship has been boarded.

The Clone Wars - S5E6 - "The Gathering"

1:29 - Petro (about the prospect of building a lightsaber):  "That is so wizard!"  Anakin's friend Kitster uses the same expression in The Phantom Menace:  "This is so wizard, Ani!" [54:25].

9:11 - Zatt (to Katooni):  "Good luck."
and
10:09 - Ganodi:  "Good luck, Gungi."

In The Empire Strikes Back, an unidentified Rebel pilot wishes Luke good luck [36:02] and Luke wishes Lando good luck [2:00:09], and in Return of the Jedi, Han and Lando wish each other good luck [Han to Lando at 50:33 and Lando to Han at 52:21].

11:15 - Ganodi (after she falls through a hole in the floor):  "Now what?"  Han also wonders, "Now what!?" during Princess Leia's rescue in A New Hope [1:18:11].

11:47 - Petro (after what he thought was his crystal melts):  "But that's impossible."  The context is quite different, but in The Empire Strikes Back, Luke also says, "That's impossible" [1:51:21].

11:52 - Yoda:  "So certain were you?"  In The Empire Strikes Back, he says almost the same thing to Luke after Luke complains that he and R2 will never get his X-wing out of the swamp:  "So certain are you?" [1:09:00].

12:35 - Zatt (about his scanner):  "That's impossible.  It's saying there's crystals everywhere, but I can't see anything."  An-other use of "That's impossible."

15:03 - Ganodi:  "I'm not afraid.  I can do this; I'm a Jedi."  Luke says two of these lines in the original trilogy:  "I'm not afraid" in The Empire Strikes Back [57:22] and "I am a Jedi" in Return of the Jedi [1:54:15].  Anakin also says, "I'm a Jedi" in Attack of the Clones [1:26:05].

15:39 - Petro:  "I'm running out of time."  Qui-Gon has a similar line in The Phantom Menace:  "Either way, we're running out of time" [40:07].

20:03 - Katooni (to Petro):  "I knew you'd come back."  At the end of A New Hope, Luke also says this to Han:  "I knew you'd come back; I just knew it" [1:57:54].

The Clone Wars - S5E5 - "Tipping Points"

2:26 - Battle droid (after an Onderon citizen smashes a fruit on an-other battle droid's head):  "What the?"  In Attack of the Clones, an alien on Coruscant makes this same exclamation as he sees Obi-Wan flying through traffic while hanging from a droid [15:08]; Han Solo says it in A New Hope after emerging from hyperspace into a meteor shower [1:03:15], and in Return of the Jedi, a scout trooper says this after being hit by Wicket [1:05:38].

3:48 - General Tandin (acquiescing to King Dendup's declaration that Steela is now the commanding general):  "As you wish, my lord."  The phrase "As you wish" occurs a number of times in the original trilogy:  in A New Hope, Vader says it after Tarkin asks him to release General Motti from his Force choke [38:45]; in The Empire Strikes Back, Boba Fett says it after Vader warns the bounty hunters against disintegrations [1:06:22]; in Return of the Jedi, Vader says it twice more in conversations with the Emperor [39:16 and 1:07:38], and Admiral Piett says it to Vader, matching Tandin's line exactly:  "As you wish, my lord" [56:13].  In The Phantom Menace, Nute Gunray says, "As you wish" at the end of a conversation with Darth Sidious [5:04], and in Revenge of the Sith, Captain Typho says, "As you wish, my lady," to Padmé [1:41:23].

5:22 - Kalani (to King Rash):  "Do not underestimate our means."  Warnings against underestimation occur twice in Return of the Jedi.  Luke tells Jabba, "It's your choice, but I warn you not to underestimate my powers" [24:26], and later Yoda tells Luke, "Luke, do not, do not underestimate the powers of the Emperor" [43:31].  In The Phantom Menace, Nute Gunray advises a battle droid, "These Jedi are not to be underestimated" [10:43], and in A New Hope, Vader tells Tarkin, "Don't underestimate the Force" [1:16:33].

12:26 - Ahsoka (to Lux):  "I'll do all I can to protect you, but I can't fight this war for you."  This echoes what Qui-Gon says to Queen Amidala in The Phantom Menace:  "And I can only protect you; I can't fight a war for you" [1:37:45].  Obi-Wan also says something similar a few episodes before this one.

12:38 - Ahsoka (as Hondo's ship arrives):  "Looks like we have company."  Han uses a similar expression in A New Hope:  "Luke, we're gonna have company!" [1:15:46].

12:51 - Ahsoka (to the rebels):  "Don't shoot!"  C-3PO also says, "Don't shoot!  Don't shoot!" (to Jawas) in A New Hope [16:26].

15:04 - Lux (after Ahsoka comments that Steela leads by example):  "What good will that do us if she gets herself killed?"  In A New Hope, Luke makes almost the same remark after Leia comments on Han's courage:  "What good will it do us if he gets himself killed?" [1:27:25].

The Clone Wars - S5E4 - "The Soft War"

0:20 - Narrator:  "With their training complete, Obi-Wan and Anakin have left Ahsoka on Onderon to monitor and advise the rebels as they continue to strike Separatist targets under the command of Steela Gerrera."  Vader uses a similar expression in The Empire Strikes Back when he tells Luke, "Join me, and I will complete your training" [1:50:39], and the Emperor uses it in Return of the Jedi (also speaking to Luke):  "I am looking forward to completing your training" [1:31:04].

7:15 - Steela:  "And rescuing him [King Dendup] will, will not be easy."  In A New Hope, General Dodonna uses the same expression while describing the plan of attack against the Death Star:  "The approach will not be easy" [1:40:08].

7:20 - Steela:  "Lux, please don't look at me like that."  In Attack of the Clones, Padmé says the same thing (to Anakin):  "Please don't look at me like that" [29:31].

7:49 - Obi-Wan:  "I sense fear in you, Ahsoka."  Yoda says almost the same thing to Anakin in The Phantom Menace:  "I sense much fear in you" [1:30:51].

8:04 - Obi-Wan:  "Do not underestimate the king's power."  Warnings against underestimation occur twice in Return of the Jedi.

The Clone Wars - S5E3 - "Front Runners"

5:16 - Obi-Wan:  "But we need to be mindful of public perception."  He uses the same expression in Attack of the Clones ("Be mindful of your thoughts, Anakin; they betray you" [12:29]) and in the previous episode.

14:06 - Steela:  "We're running out of time."  Qui-Gon also says this in The Phantom Menace:  "Either way, we're running out of time" [40:07].

14:45 - Steela:  "I'll draw their fire."  Red Leader says something similar near the end of A New Hope, as the assault on the Death Star begins:  "I'm gonna cut across the axis and try and draw their fire" [1:46:08].

16:29 - Steela (to Saw before he fires the tank's cannon into the power generator):  "You're all clear."  Han Solo uses this same expression near the end of A New Hope, before Luke fires his torpedo into the Death Star:  "You're all clear, kid.  Now let's blow this thing and go home." [1:56:54]

20:27 - As Dooku introduces him ("This is Kalani"), Kalani steps into the hologram in the same way that Darth Maul steps into the hologram when Darth Sidious introduces him ("This is my apprentice, Darth Maul") in The Phantom Menace [27:38].  The relative positions of the two characters are also similar:

21:43 - Steela (explaining to Ahsoka why she can't just let Saw leave):  "He's my brother."  Leia also says this in Return of the Jedi [2:04:03].

Tuesday, February 21, 2023

The Clone Wars - S5E2 - "A War on Two Fronts"

12:13 - Obi-Wan (to Steela):  "Be mindful of your frustration.  It will only hold you back."  In Attack of the Clones, he uses the same expression:  "Be mindful of your thoughts, Anakin; they betray you" [12:29].

14:55 - Anakin (after Steela shoots a target):  "Impressive.  Most impressive."  Vader gives the same compliment to Luke in The Empire Strikes Back [1:44:30].

16:21 - Obi-Wan (to Anakin, about the rebels):  "We can only protect them; we cannot fight this war for them."  This echoes what Qui-Gon says to Queen Amidala in The Phantom Menace:  "And I can only protect you; I can't fight a war for you" [1:37:45].

16:29 - Obi-Wan (about the droids):  "There are too many."  Captain Panaka says something similar in The Phantom Menace (referring to battle droids):  "There are too many of them" [23:25], as does a Jedi youngling in Revenge of the Sith (referring to the clones executing Order 66 at the Jedi temple):  "Master Skywalker, there are too many of them" [1:23:40], and a rebel pilot says basically the same thing in Return of the Jedi (referring to TIE fighters):  "There's too many of them" [1:35:13].

17:10 - Obi-Wan (to Steela, referring to a droid tank):  "We'll handle this."  Qui-Gon (referring to himself and Obi-Wan) also says this when Darth Maul appears in The Phantom Menace [1:50:29], although Obi-Wan also says something similar in Attack of the Clones (about fighting Count Dooku):  "Anakin and I can handle this" [2:03:07].

19:41 - Battle droid (to the rebel convoy):  "Halt!"  In The Phantom Menace, a battle droid also says this to Qui-Gon as he leads a group of Naboo to a ship [24:25].

21:11 - Lux Bontari:  "Good luck."  It's ambiguous whether he directs this to Steela or Ahsoka, but in The Empire Strikes Back, an unidentified Rebel pilot wishes Luke good luck [36:02] and Luke wishes Lando good luck [2:00:09], and in Return of the Jedi, Han and Lando wish each other good luck [Han to Lando at 50:33 and Lando to Han at 52:21].

Tuesday, February 14, 2023

The Clone Wars - S5E1 - "Revival"

2:37 - Maul (to Savage):  "Always two there are, my brother, a master and an apprentice."  Speaking to Mace Windu, Yoda says almost the same thing in The Phantom Menace:  "Always two there are, no more, no less, a master and an apprentice" [2:07:59].

3:12 - Maul (to Savage):  "And I shall complete your training, not as your brother but as your master."  Vader uses the same expression in The Empire Strikes Back when he tells Luke, "Join me, and I will complete your training" [1:50:39], and the Emperor uses it in Return of the Jedi (also speaking to Luke):  "I am looking forward to completing your training" [1:31:04].

7:20 - Maul:  "Hondo's base will soon be ours, and he will not survive this."  Near the beginning of The Phantom Menace, Rune Haako says something similar as the Jedi cut down battle droids:  "We will not survive this" [6:12].  There's also some resemblance to what Palpatine says to Luke in Return of the Jedi:  "And your friends on the Endor moon will not survive" [1:44:25].

14:27 - Hondo:  "Retreat!  Retreat!"  Jar Jar also yells, "Retreat!  Retreat!" in The Phantom Menace [1:56:53].

18:25 - The cockpit of Maul and Savage's ship features yet more uses of the hexagon design seen in the homestead garage in Attack of the Clones and A New Hope:

The Clone Wars - S4E22 - "Revenge"

10:25 - Mace Windu:  "This is clearly a trap."  The context here is different, but Admiral Ackbar says, "It's a trap!" in Return of the Jedi [1:35:03], and Leia says it twice in The Empire Strikes Back [1:39:50].

12:56 - Maul (to Obi-Wan):  "I have been waiting for you."  Vader greets him the same way in A New Hope:  "I've been waiting for you, Obi-Wan" [1:30:09].

17:42 - Ventress (to Obi-Wan):  "It looks like I'm here to rescue you."  Luke says the same thing to Leia in A New Hope:  "I'm here to rescue you" [1:16:09].
