The Clone Wars - S2E16 - "Cat and Mouse"

0:58 - Anakin:  "Master Kenobi better get here soon or this is gonna be one short rescue mission."  This bears some similarity to what Han Solo says in A New Hope (also referring to Obi-Wan):  "I hope that old man got that tractor beam out of commission or this is gonna be a real short trip" [1:32:55].

3:33 - Admiral Trench:  "I have won this round."  Perhaps coincidentally, Padmé uses this same phrase in The Phantom Menace, referring to the Trade Federation battle droids:  "They win this round" [1:58:17].

5:08 - Obi-Wan (to Anakin):  "I need you to run a mercy mission down to the planet's surface" and a bit later (5:26):  "I need you to continue the mercy mission."  Darth Vader also uses the phrase "mercy mission" in A New Hope when he says to Leia, "You weren't on any mercy mission this time" [7:47].

11:48 - Bail Organa:  "Help us, General Kenobi; you're our only hope."  Obviously, this echoes Leia's line "Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi; you're my only hope" in A New Hope [35:35], but this whole episode is also an example of what she refers to at the beginning of her message:  "General Kenobi, years ago, you served my father in the Clone Wars..." [35:05].

17:04 - Trench: "And your friends on the planet below shall perish as a result of your failure."  This has some resemblance to what Palpatine says to Luke in Return of the Jedi:  "And your friends on the Endor moon will not survive" [1:44:25].

18:18 - Anakin:  "Well, no ship this small usually has a cloaking device."  Captain Needa has a similar line, referring to the Millennium Falcon, in The Empire Strikes Back:  "No ship that small has a cloaking device" [1:07:49].

The Clone Wars - S2E15 - "Senate Murders"

0:37 - An-other reuse of a shot originally from "Rookies" (S1E5) that copies a shot near the end of Attack of the Clones [2:13:51]:

1:55 - Padmé:  "'Exciting' isn't exactly the word I would use."  C-3PO has a similar line in Return of the Jedi:  "'Exciting' is hardly the word I would choose" [51:29].

4:17 - Padmé:  "Committing more troops to the front lines will not allow diplomacy to resume."  Padmé uses a similar phrase in Revenge of the Sith when she says to Anakin, "Now you're closer to the Chancellor than anyone.  Please, ask him to stop the fighting and let diplomacy resume." [41:55].

9:19 - Senator Organa:  "We should double our efforts on the vote."  Moff Jerjerrod also uses this expression in Return of the Jedi:  "We shall double our efforts" [4:38].

15:39 - Senator Organa:  "If we hurry, we might still be able to catch Deechi before he leaves the Senate."  Perhaps coincidentally, this bears some resemblance to C-3PO's ruse in A New Hope where he tells some stormtroopers:  "They're mad men!  They're heading for the prison level; if you hurry, you might catch them!" [1:22:27].

The Clone Wars - S2E14 - "Duchess of Mandalore"

0:18 - Narrator:  "A diplomatic mission!"  Like I mentioned two episodes ago, the phrase "diplomatic mission" occurs a couple times in A New Hope.  Captain Antilles tells Vader that "We're on a diplomatic mission" [5.55], and later Leia tells him, "I'm a member of the Imperial Senate on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan" [7:58].

3:30 - Deputy Minister Jerec:  "The actions by our government have taken us into a period of civil war."  (He says this in both the falsified recording and the unaltered one at 18:16.)  The phrase "a period of civil war" also appears in the opening crawl of A New Hope:  "It is a period of civil war."

4:59 - Satine (to Palpatine):  "You will turn our planet into a military target, which will bring the war to us."  Tarkin also uses the phrase "a military target" in A New Hope when he's talking to Leia:  "You would prefer another target?  A military target?  Then name the system!" [58:12].

In both the episode trivia and the featurette for this episode on the Star Wars website, it's noted that the Coruscant plaza is based on a Ralph McQuarrie painting.

The Clone Wars - S2E13 - "Voyage of Temptation"

0:18 - Narrator:  "Sent to investigate allegations that Mandalore was joining Count Dooku's Separatists, Obi-Wan was reunited with an old friend, the Duchess Satine of Kalevala."  Perhaps coincidentally, the phrase "old friend" is also used in Attack of the Clones (where Palpatine suggests "an old friend, like Master Kenobi" to protect Padmé [6:34] and Count Dooku calls Mace Windu "my old Jedi friend" [1:50:24] and just "old friend" [1:56:05]), in Revenge of the Sith (where Obi-Wan says, "Goodbye, old friend" to Anakin as he leaves for Utapau [51:13] and Yoda refers to Qui-Gon as "an old friend" [2:09:56]), in A New Hope (where Leia sarcastically says, "We, uh, ran into some old friends" when Han asks her and Luke where they've been [1:31:33]), in The Empire Strikes Back (where Yoda says that through the Force, Luke will see "Old friends long gone" [1:17:05]), and in Return of the Jedi (where Luke says, "I have a promise to keep to an old friend" [37:37] and Han calls C-3PO "an old friend of mine" [1:11:53]).

In the "Creating Mandalore" featurette on the DVD, Dave Filoni says that the design of Mandalore has a "Nordic flavor."  The name of Satine's home world is also one of these Nordic-inspired elements; Kalevala is the title of a Finnish epic poem.

10:34 - Anakin (to the clone troopers as assassin droids attack):  "Get behind me."  In A New Hope, Han Solo says this twice to Chewbacca as stormtroopers attack [1:17:12].

12:28 - Obi-Wan: "I sense it too."  Here, he's referring to the fact that one of the senators is a traitor, but he also says this in Attack of the Clones when he and Anakin perceive intruders in Padmé's room [14:08].

19:47 - There's a brief cue of the Imperial march as Anakin kills Tal Merrick*.

---
*There's some discrepancy in how Merrick's name is spelt.  In the credits, it's Merrick, but on the Star Wars website, it's Merrik.

The Clone Wars - S2E12 - "The Mandalore Plot"

12:08 - Obi-Wan:  "I am here on a diplomatic mission."  The phrase "diplomatic mission" occurs a couple times in A New Hope.  Captain Antilles tells Vader that "We're on a diplomatic mission" [5:55], and later Leia tells him, "I'm a member of the Imperial Senate on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan" [7:58].

20:33 - Pre Vizsla:  "We'll catch up with the duchess soon enough."  Perhaps coincidentally, Tarkin has a similar line in A New Hope when he tells Leia:  "We will deal with your Rebel friends soon enough" [58:45].

---

As Dave Filoni explains in the featurette for this episode on the Star Wars website, the painting in Pre Vizsla's meeting room (first seen at 10:55) is in the style of Picasso's Guernica.

The Clone Wars - S2E11 - "Lightsaber Lost"

1:58 - Ahsoka:  "I, I was checking out a suspect.  I had a bad feeling about him."

2:44 - Ahsoka:  "He [Anakin] tells me over and over, 'Your lightsaber is your life; don't lose it.'"  In Attack of the Clones, Obi-Wan tells Anakin, "This weapon is your life" [21:59].

2:51 - A file in the Jedi library shows a woman who later appears in the cantina in A New Hope [first in a wide shot at 45:04, then in a closer shot at 45:40].  According to the trivia for this episode on the Star Wars website, this is Brea Tonnika.

[source]

21:17 - Master Sinube (to Ahsoka):  "Pass on what you have learned."  Yoda also says this (to Luke) in Return of the Jedi [44:11].

21:45 - Ahsoka (to a group of younglings):  "This weapon is your life, but it is also your responsibility.   Don't let it out of your sight."  An-other reference to Obi-Wan's "This weapon is your life" in Attack of the Clones.

The Clone Wars - S2E10 - "The Deserter"

13:51 - Battle droid (to General Grievous):  "Roger, roger, but I must inform you, sir, there are multiple life forms approaching from the east and west."  This is somewhat similar to C-3PO's "There are several creatures approaching from the southeast" in A New Hope [28:31].

15:48 - Clone trooper (to an-other clone trooper):  "Great shot!"  There's probably not much of a parallel to be drawn, but Han Solo says something similar to Luke at the end of A New Hope:  "Great shot, kid!  That was one in a million!"  [1:57:20].

The Clone Wars - S2E9 - "Grievous Intrigue"

4:23 - Plo Koon:  "Commander Wolffe has found a message in the holo-transmission.  Play back the message."  This bears some resemblance to what Luke says to R2-D2 in A New Hope:  "Play back the entire message!" [22:59]

11:15 - General Grievous:  "So, Kenobi, is everything going as planned?"
Obi-Wan:  "That depends on your point of view, General."

This seems to be a reference to Obi-Wan's "from a certain point of view" in Return of the Jedi [46:23].

The Clone Wars - S2E8 - "Brain Invaders"

5:12 - Barriss Offee:  "Master Windu has said we are keepers of the peace, not warriors."  Barriss refers to a meeting between Chancellor Palpatine and the Jedi (including herself) in Attack of the Clones where Mace Windu says, "We're keepers of the peace, not soldiers" [4:49].

6:06 - Clone pilot (after other clones point blasters at him):  "What the?"  In Attack of the Clones, an alien on Coruscant makes this same exclamation as he sees Obi-Wan flying through traffic while hanging from a droid [15:08]; Han says it in A New Hope after emerging from hyperspace into a meteor shower [1:03:15]; and in Return of the Jedi, a scout trooper says this after being hit by Wicket [1:05:38].

11:50 - Ahsoka: "I have a bad feeling about this, Master Fisto."

12:42 - Ahsoka (to Rex):  "Boy, am I glad to hear your voice."  Luke says something similar in A New Hope:  "Ben Kenobi?  Boy, am I glad to see you!" [30:35]

14:06 - Anakin (to the clone troopers guarding Poggle the Lesser):  "Leave us."  Palpatine has similar lines twice in the movies:  "Leave us" to his entourage at the opera in Revenge of the Sith [43:44] and "Guards, leave us" to the Imperial guards in Return of the Jedi [1:30:55].

18:28 - Ahsoka directs the exhaust from a hose at Barriss, similar to what Luke does to Vader in The Empire Strikes Back [1:44:37].

---

There are brief cues of the Imperial March at 5:49 when Ahsoka talks about Anakin's future and at 14:02 when Anakin goes to interrogate Poggle.

The Clone Wars - S2E7 - "Legacy of Terror"

11:10 - Anakin (about the Geonosian mind control):  "That can't be true.  That's impossible."  Luke says something similar when Vader tells him about his father in The Empire Strikes Back:  "That's not true.  That's impossible." [1:51:21]

13:45 - Anakin:  "I've got a bad feeling about this."

Tuesday, December 14, 2021

The Clone Wars - S2E6 - "Weapons Factory"

5:01 - Luminara:  "It's decided then."  Mace Windu uses a similar expression in Revenge of the Sith:  "It's settled then; Yoda will take a battalion of clones to reinforce the Wookiees on Kashyyyk" [38:08].

7:24 - Tactical droid (to Geonosian):  "You may now commence attack."  Admiral Ackbar uses the same expression in Return of the Jedi:  "Commence attack on the Death Star's main reactor!" [1:54:46]

8:55 - Barriss (to Ahsoka):  "Trust me."  Han also says this (to Leia) in The Empire Strikes Back [1:20:06].

10:51 - Tactical droid (to Poggle the Lesser, about the supertanks):  "We have twenty units ready now and many more on the way."  In his conversation with Obi-Wan, Lama Su similarly appraises the clone army in Attack of the Clones:  "Two hundred thousand units are ready with a million more well on the way" [42:48].

11:46 - Rex (to the clone gunners):  "Steady, steady."  In The Phantom Menace, Jar Jar also says this to the Gungan soldiers [1:48:30].

12:31 - Tactical droid:  "Two Jedi in the control room?  That is impossible."  In The Empire Strikes Back, Luke also says, "That's impossible" [1:51:21].

14:21 - Luminara Unduli (to Anakin):  "I see what you have in mind."  It's probably just coincidence, but Han Solo has a similar line in A New Hope:  "Don't worry, Chewie; I think I know what he [Luke] has in mind" [1:12:12].  In The Empire Strikes Back, Leia also asks Han, "What'd you have in mind for your next move?" [1:14:52].

16:36 - Luminara:  "My padawan will not fail."  Palpatine says almost the same thing in Attack of the Clones:  "My negotiations will not fail" [4:40].

18:18 - Anakin:  "Master Luminara, don't worry."  "Don't worry" also appears in Attack of the Clones (Anakin tells Padmé, "Don't worry; I've given up trying to argue with you" [1:36:02]), Revenge of the Sith (C-3PO tells Padmé, "Don't worry; I'm sure he'll be alright," referring to Anakin [1:24:00], and a clone trooper tells Bail Organa, "Don't worry; the situation is under control [1:24:35]), A New Hope (Obi-Wan tells R2-D2, "Oh, don't worry; he'll be alright," referring to Luke [30:17]; Han tells Chewbacca, "Don't worry, Chewie; I think I know what he [Luke] has in mind" [1:12:12]; and Han tells Leia, "Don't worry; she'll hold together," referring to the Millennium Falcon [1:34:57]), The Empire Strikes Back (C-3PO tells R2, "Don't worry about Master Luke; I'm sure he'll be alright" [12:45]; Luke tells R2, "Don't worry, R2.  We're going!  We're going!" [36:07]; and Han tells Leia, "Don't worry" [1:20:04]), and Return of the Jedi (Lando, referring to Han, tells Nien Nunb, "Don't worry; my friend's down there; he'll have that shield down on time" [1:27:18]).

The Clone Wars - S2E5 - "Landing at Point Rain"

3:14 - Anakin (after Ahsoka points out a formidable defensive wall):  "Don't worry; we're not goin' anywhere near that."
&
3:20 - Anakin (to Obi-Wan):  "Don't worry about us."

"Don't worry" also appears in Attack of the Clones (Anakin tells Padmé, "Don't worry; I've given up trying to argue with you" [1:36:02]), Revenge of the Sith (C-3PO tells Padmé, "Don't worry; I'm sure he'll be alright," referring to Anakin [1:24:00], and a clone trooper tells Bail Organa, "Don't worry; the situation is under control [1:24:35]), A New Hope (Obi-Wan tells R2-D2, "Oh, don't worry; he'll be alright," referring to Luke [30:17]; Han tells Chewbacca, "Don't worry, Chewie; I think I know what he [Luke] has in mind" [1:12:12]; and Han tells Leia, "Don't worry; she'll hold together," referring to the Millennium Falcon [1:34:57]), The Empire Strikes Back (C-3PO tells R2, "Don't worry about Master Luke; I'm sure he'll be alright" [12:45]; Luke tells R2, "Don't worry, R2.

5:05 - Admiral Yularen:  "Good luck, General."
5:08 - Ki-Adi Mundi:  "There is no such thing as luck."

In The Empire Strikes Back, an unidentified Rebel pilot wishes Luke good luck [36:02] and Luke wishes Lando good luck [2:00:09], and in Return of the Jedi, Han and Lando wish each other good luck [Han to Lando at 50:33 and Lando to Han at 52:21].
Mundi's response here is basically the same as Obi-Wan's in A New Hope:  "In my experience, there's no such thing as luck" [1:02:17].

8:42 - Anakin (to Ahsoka):  "Hey, I'm worried about him too, but you have to keep your mind in the here and now; otherwise, we'll never be able to help Obi-Wan."  This echoes what Qui-Gon tells Obi-Wan at the beginning of The Phantom Menace:  "Keep your concentration here and now where it belongs" [3:16].

9:37 - Obi-Wan:  "Waxer, Boil, am I glad to see you."  Luke greets him the same way in A New Hope:  "Ben Kenobi?  Boy, am I glad to see you!" [30:35]

10:20 - Obi-Wan (to Cody):  "What's the situation here?"  General Grievous also asks this in Revenge of the Sith:  "What's the situation, Captain?" [8:39]

11:52 - Anakin:  "Hey, it's not my fault."  "It's not my fault" also appears three times in The Empire Strikes Back.  Han [1:07:00 and 1:07:02] and Lando [1:56:52] both say this when the Millennium Falcon's hyperdrive doesn't work.  Han also says, "It's not my fault" in Return of the Jedi as he's explaining to Jabba why he didn't pay him [20:26], and in A New Hope, C-3PO, speaking to Luke after R2 disappears, has a similar line:  "It wasn't my fault, sir" [26:21].

12:17 - Ki-Adi Mundi:  "All I can do is trust my instincts. "  This bears some resemblance to what Qui-Gon tells Anakin before the podrace in The Phantom Menace:  "Feel, don't think; use your instincts" [57:47].

13:02 - Rex (to Anakin):  "So what's the plan, General?"  In A New Hope, Han asks Luke almost the same thing:  "What's your plan?" [1:11:56].

13:07 - Anakin:  "Ahsoka and I will handle this."  This is similar to what Qui-Gon says (referring to himself and Obi-Wan) when Darth Maul appears in The Phantom Menace:  "We'll handle this" [1:50:29].  To a lesser degree, it's also similar to Obi-Wan's "Anakin and I can handle this" in Attack of the Clones [2:03:07].

21:00 - Anakin (to Obi-Wan and Ki-Adi Mundi):  "Well, take care of yourselves."  This is Luke's farewell to Han near the end of A New Hope:  "Well, take care of yourself, Han" [1:42:05].

21:24 - Obi-Wan (after Anakin says Master Mundi wins his "everlasting respect"):  "That is a gift Anakin rarely bestows; I assure you."  Qui-Gon uses the same expression in The Phantom Menace; after Queen Amidala says that Senator Palpatine fears the Trade Federation wants to destroy her, he replies, "I assure you I will not allow that to happen" [1:36:33].  Palpatine uses it while talking to Mace Windu and addressing the senate in Revenge of the Sith ("And I assure you, the senate will vote to continue the war as long as Grievous is alive" [25:12] and "But I assure you, my resolve has never been stronger!" [1:35:16]) and while talking to Luke in Return of the Jedi ("I assure you we are quite safe from your friends here" [1:32:08]).
